Context
When Alstom launched its skills intelligence project, the company was emerging from a transformational merger that doubled its workforce overnight. Shifting from two separate organizations into one global mobility leader, Alstom recognized the need to harmonize its HR processes across 63 countries. This shift highlighted the importance of a unified, AI-powered skills approach to drive internal mobility at scale while meeting the rigorous compliance standards of the rail sector.
Challenges
Alstom initially faced the challenge of managing skills across a doubled organization with no shared framework. This prompted a comprehensive rethinking of its skills and job architecture. The ambitious goal was to develop a dynamic platform that integrates all HR processes, including talent management, career development, internal mobility, and workforce intelligence — fully connected to SAP SuccessFactors. Leveraging AI, Alstom now anticipates evolving skills needs across digitalisation, services, and signalling to remain competitive in a rapidly changing mobility market.
Results
The results of Alstom’s skills intelligence project have been highly promising. Just nine months after the launch, 55,000 employees were actively deployed on the platform with 65% of managers and employees engaged, demonstrating strong adoption. The platform generated 4,000 internal mobility applications in nine months — a concrete, measurable business outcome delivering ROI from day one.
